Can I connect a third-party solar panel to my microinverter?

Only if the voltage and wattage match. The small microinverter in our balcony kits has a single input port, so a second panel connects in parallel through a Y cable. Parallel connection requires the two panels to run at substantially the same voltage and be of roughly the same size.

Our 180W panels have a maximum power voltage of about 41.8V. Camping and portable panels are typically 18 to 20V, often described as 12V panels because they are meant to charge a 12V battery. Wiring an 18V panel in parallel with a 42V panel does not produce more power; it produces a mismatch the inverter cannot use. A wattage mismatch is less sever, but both panels will be limited by the lowest common denominator. In other words, the smaller panel will "drag down" the larger one.

Therefore, be sure to check the panel's input voltage and output wattage on its datasheet or label before buying anything.

Can I connect more than two panels?

Not to one microinverter. There is one photovoltaic input, and the two panels of a 360W kit already occupy it in parallel. More panels means more microinverters, on separate circuits or one dedicated circuit.

Can I use my panels with a portable power station instead?

Yes, and this is the more common answer. Our panels use standard MC4 connectors, so they plug into most portable power stations directly or through an adapter cable. You would not be using the kit's microinverter in that setup.

What about connecting panels in series rather than parallel?

Series adds the voltages, which will take you outside the microinverter's input range. The kit is designed around parallel connection of two matched panels.

Is voltage or wattage more important?

Voltage is the binding constraint. Two panels of similar voltage but different wattage will work, but the pair will be limited by the weaker one.
