Claire Brown's piece in The New York Times tells the story of something that still feels impossible to most people: plugging a solar panel into the wall and watching your meter spin backwards. When I read it, I was struck by how clearly the piece captured the gap between how obvious this technology feels to those of us who work on it every day and how genuinely surprising it is to everyone else.
What the Times Got Right
The New York Times story didn't oversimplify plug-in solar, and it didn't overcomplicate it either. It started from a real consumer's experience — someone who actually installed a unit and watched their electricity bill change — and worked outward to explain the technology, the regulatory landscape, and what's holding broader adoption back. Plug-in solar sits at the intersection of energy technology, housing policy, consumer economics, and utility regulation. A reporter who can hold all of those threads together while keeping the story grounded in human experience is doing something genuinely difficult.
