When Goliaths rig the rules, even capitalism needs backup.

When markets fail, it's often because someone's rigged the rules. I wrote this piece to unpack a hard truth: capitalism can't solve everything — especially when powerful incumbents use policy to protect their position against better, cheaper alternatives. Plug-in solar is a case study in this problem.
The Rigged Energy Market
Plug-in solar panels are cheaper, faster to install, and more accessible to more people than any other form of residential solar generation. The technology is proven. Millions of units are operating successfully in Europe. The economics are favorable for consumers. In a well-functioning market, this technology would spread rapidly based on its merits. Instead, it faces a thicket of regulatory barriers, utility opposition, and policy frameworks designed before it existed — designed, in many cases, by the very utilities that benefit from consumers not having alternatives.
Why This Is a Nonprofit Problem
This is one of the core reasons Bright Saver is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rather than a venture-backed startup. A startup optimizes for market opportunity — it follows the rules as given and tries to win within them. A nonprofit can push back on the rules themselves. We work directly with legislators in 29-plus states to build regulatory frameworks that serve consumers rather than utility incumbents. We have credibility in those conversations that a profit-seeking company would not have.
What the Backup Looks Like
The backup that capitalism needs when Goliaths rig the rules is good policy. Clear, consumer-protective regulation that removes artificial barriers to competition and gives new technologies a fair chance to succeed on their merits. That's what plug-in solar legislation does. And that's what Bright Saver is working to build — alongside the product itself. Our NEM GO kit ships four 250-watt panels that any California homeowner with existing rooftop solar can install in about 45 minutes, no electrician needed, starting at $1,499.
