Why does plug-in solar cost more in the US than in Germany?

Mostly because of what happens to the hardware before it reaches you, not because of anything a US state has done. In Germany, a kit of panels and a microinverter that plugs into an ordinary socket is a mature consumer product, sold in ordinary shops at ordinary retail prices. A German household pays as little as $0.45 per watt. In the United States the figure is several times that.
Almost none of that gap is manufacturing. The panel is broadly the same panel. What differs is tariffs, freight, a smaller market buying in smaller volumes, and a supply chain that has not yet standardised around this product category.
This matters for how you read the fight over plug-in solar. State law decides whether you are allowed to plug one in. Federal trade policy is most of the reason the kit is not cheaper. Those are two different arguments with two different audiences.
Is the German panel a different product?
Generally not in any way that explains the price. However, the retail ecosystem around them is far more developed, with major retailers stocking them off the shelf.
Does the exchange rate explain it?
It moves the number but does not create the gap. The difference is far larger than currency movement accounts for.
Will US prices come down?
They come down as volume rises, as more manufacturers enter, and if trade conditions change. Germany's own prices fell sharply as the category grew there, which is the pattern we expect rather than a promise about timing.
Where does my money actually go?
We publish the cost breakdown for our kits, because we sell them at cost and think the arithmetic should be checkable. Nothing in it is margin on hardware.
