These are different tools for different situations. One isn't universally better than the other. But for most NEM 1.0 and NEM 2.0 customers who need 1-2 kW of additional capacity, plug-in solar is faster, cheaper, and simpler.

When Plug-In Makes More Sense
You need 1 kW or less of additional capacity. Most NEM customers who got an EV, added a heat pump, or just have a growing family need a small bump — not a major expansion. A plug-in kit fills that gap without the overhead of a full installation project.
Your installer won't take the job. Many solar companies won't come back for a 1-2 panel add-on. The margins on a small job don't pencil out for them, so you're stuck waiting or overpaying.
You want it done today, not next month. A plug-in kit ships to your door or you pick it up from our Oakland or LA warehouse. Ikea-style assembly, plug in, start earning NEM credits the same afternoon.
Your roof can't support more panels. Shading, structural limits, or just no more space. Backyard panels solve that.

When Traditional Makes More Sense
You need 5kW+ of additional capacity. Plug-in kits max out at about 1 kW (the NEM expansion limit). If you need significantly more, rooftop is the right call.
You're building new or doing a major renovation. If electricians are already on site and permits are already pulled, adding rooftop panels is incremental.
You want to maximize property value. Rooftop solar factors into home valuations and appraisals. Plug-in solar is portable — great for you, but doesn't add to the home's assessed value.

The 4-panel kit produces more annual kWh than a traditional 1kW add-on because oversizing the array (4 panels on a 900W inverter) captures more energy in mornings, afternoons, and cloudy conditions. The inverter clips peak output briefly on the sunniest days, but annual energy lost to clipping is only about 10%.
NEM Credits Work the Same Way
This is the key point: whether your extra kWh come from rooftop panels or a plug-in kit in the backyard, they flow through the same bi-directional meter and earn the same NEM credits at your existing NEM rate. The utility meter doesn't distinguish between sources. A watt is a watt.

Can I really plug solar into a regular outlet?
Yes. The microinverter converts DC to standard 120V AC and feeds it through a standard outlet. Anti-islanding protection shuts the system down within milliseconds during power outages.
Will it void my rooftop warranty?
No. Plug-in solar operates independently of your rooftop system. Different panels, different inverter, different circuit.
